Enjoying Our Learning Together

PE and Sport

PE and Sport at St Mary’s plays an important part in helping us to achieve our vision, our mission, our aims and our values, while helping the children develop and understand a healthy lifestyle and looking after their well-being.

To support this national initiative and build on the ‘Olympic Legacy’ the Government has provided all schools with a PE and Sport Grant. For 2016-17 we will receive £9,150.00

Over this period we aim to;

       - continue to support the training of our P.E. Specialist teacher to help ensure future             provision is sustainable by ensuring they have qualified in their NVQ level 5 sports          teaching award.

       - improve swimming provision by enabling Year 6 to enhance swimming skills at          Fanshawe Pool over and above existing provision for Years 3, 4 and 5 in our school          pool.

       - refurbished the school swimming pool so that it can be used throughout the summer          term rather than just during the final 6 weeks. Ensuring that swimming provision at          both St Mary’s and Kingshill can continue for many many years into the future.

       - update all teachers and teaching assistant qualifications so that are qualified to          provide suitable shallow pool lifeguarding skills

Below is a breakdown of how we have spent the PE and Sport Grant over the last financial year;

Our role of honour for 2016-17 has included two county championships:

             - Girls football: Hertford and Ware Schools District Champions.

             - Boys Football: Hertford and Ware Schools District 3rd place.

             - Indoor Sportshall Athletics: Girls and Boys Hertford and Ware Schools District               Champions. Girls Hertfordshire County Champions, Boys Hertfordshire County 3rd                place.

               Year 3 and 4 Hertford and Ware Schools 2nd place.

Well done to all those involved, with many thanks to Mr Carr and Miss Bullar for all their organisation. Fabulous achievements!

The children also take part in a variety of inter-house competitions over the year including, hockey, basketball, cross-country and athletics. The points won in these events are all added up and contribute to finding out which house go on to collect the coveted ‘Sports Day’ Cup.

2016-17 Sports Day Cup results;

                                           1st: Yellow House: 2847 points

                                           2nd: Green House: 2815 points

                                           3rd: Blue House:    2757 points

                                           4th: Red House:      2719 points

Well done to all, a very competitive and close competition throughout the year, with Yellow House retaining their championship.

A PE Curriculum Map has been developed so that there is the same coverage of sports over the children’s four years with us, however each sport is taught less frequently but in more depth allowing coaching to be more intense and taking the children’s skills to a higher level. All teachers received 1 to 1 Gymnastic coaching in 2014-15 during their P.E. Lessons by a qualified gymnastic coach from our school Sports Partnership to improve the quality of gymnastic teaching. In 2015-16 all teachers took part in an ‘I Move’ Dance training day and are using the online scheme and resources to deliver improved dance lessons. Year 6 children took part in quality external orienteering activities at Cuffley Camp for the first time in the Summer term 2015 helping to add to the breadth of P.E. provision.
